Russian AI Plans in Defense

Russia is sharply focused on advancing AI technologies within its defense sector.

A recent study indicates that the Russian military already boasts a diverse array of AI-equipped weaponry.

Official public statements and program announcements reflect the highest levels of Russian political and military leadership’s recognition of AI’s strategic importance. Consequently, there’s a robust investment in AI’s military applications, incorporating efforts from both government and private-sector research hubs.

Despite facing criticism over its AI development trajectory, Russia’s proficiency in autonomous navigation suggests that by 2024, it could start deploying fully autonomous robots and AI-powered drones on the battlefield.

Furthermore, as Russia steps up the industrial output of drones and robotic systems, it’s likely that by 2025-2026, these autonomous AI-powered units could be utilized on a large scale. Such a development would significantly bolster Russia’s combat capabilities, particularly if these systems prove resistant to electronic warfare and advanced anti-drone mechanisms.
